More about The Kimberley Marine Research Station

Established in 2009, the Kimberley Marine Research Station (KMRS) represents the first and only fully operational marine research facility in the world’s last great tropical marine wilderness; the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia. Located on Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, KMRS is situated on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula, 200km north of Broome on the Cape Leveque Rd.

Since opening our working pearl farm base to the science community, our mission has been to facilitate broad-scale, truly independent marine research on the Kimberley coastline and waters as effectively, efficiently and safely as possible. We have a range of vessels, accommodation, catering, research infrastructure and expert personnel available to support all levels of marine research and logistics in the region's coastal and near-shore waters.
Our objective is to establish KMRS as a functional research hub and service provider, offering the range of marine expertise, facilities and logistical capabilities required to support field research and long-term monitoring in what is otherwise a largely unchartered and unstudied marine region. In doing so, our aim is to help install and maintain a stronger research presence and effort in the Kimberley, focused directly at bridging the knowledge gap on this remarkable and unique marine realm.
