Why Zenryoku?

Self-defence, fitness, competition, confidence, discipline, flexibility – there are many reasons why our students train Zenryoku. Our team of highly trained instructors provide a well-rounded syllabus to develop students who are confident, strong and experienced in a range of techniques and abilities.

Our junior students participate in “Stranger Danger” activities helping equip them with an awareness of dangerous situations and how to avoid them as well as the knowledge, confidence and skills to use vocal and self-defence techniques.

Whilst our female students learn special women’s self-defence techniques and how to put them into practice.

Training

As Zenryoku Martial Arts is a freestyle martial art, the techniques practiced may differ from class to class. One lesson you may focus mainly on standing/striking martial arts (Karate, Muay Thai, Kung fu, Tai-kwon-do), and the next you may do mainly throwing/ground based martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Wrestling).

Junior classes run for an hour, and senior classes run for an hour and a half. The first 10-15 minutes consisting of low impact aerobics or advanced callisthenics (depending on each student’s level of fitness) and stretching to loosen and strengthen student’s muscles.

The following 30 minutes of the lesson usually consists of technique based training in which you will be following techniques shown to you by the instructor. This may include pad work or individual/partner drills.

The next 40 minutes is usually based around putting these techniques into use. This may be done through: rounds of sparring, ground fighting/wrestling, and other self defence/combat based training.

The last 5-10 minutes of the class will consist of a warm down activity such as Kata (a requirement for gradings), or a slow run down of some techniques. The intensity of the training in the class may differ dramatically from beginners to advanced students. However, you will have to apply yourself fully to class lessons to receive the benefits of the exercises, only by doing this will you progress.

Weapons Training

At an intermediate grade level students are introduced to traditional martial arts weapons training. Some of the weapons including: twin sticks, bow-staff, swords, and kama. Advanced students will be asked to choose a weapon (of any origin) and study its uses when looking for a black belt grade.
