According to the Yidinyji tribal language, the name “Yungaburra” means “a place of enquiring or questioning.”
James Robson, in the 1870’s cut the first track to the Allumbah area from the coastal strip south of Cairns. The track commenced on the Mulgrave River and ascended the range to Boar Pocket. It continued to Ball Pocket (Kulara), Picnic Crossing (Pinnacle Pocket) and onto Scrubby Creek to link up with a mining track from Port Douglas to the Herberton Mining area.

Following the construction of Tinaroo Dam, it became necessary to realign the Gillies Highway where it passed through Yungaburra. (Allumbah Pocket)

Following the opening of the Allumbah Village (Yungaburra) School in 1909, a number of smaller schools were opened in the rural areas near the village. The main factors for this were the isolation of rural farms and the absence of reliable transport.
With gradual improvements in the above factors, these smaller schools were closed and most students transferred to Yungaburra.

When Yungaburra State School opened on 7th June 1909, Miss Alice Cameron was appointed the initial Headteacher position. There were 13 boys and 10 girls enrolled at that point.

So from these humble beginnings, this school has grown to where it is now, having been relocated from the site of the present day town cemetery, to where it is in Maple Street in 1917.

The rest, as they say, is history.

In 2009 Yungaburra State School celebrated its centenary.
