Yulu-Burri-Ba Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health
(Yulu-Burri-Ba) provides primary health care and associated health services to the Aboriginal community of North Stradbroke Island and Brisbane’s eastern bayside suburbs in south-east Queensland.
In the early 1980’s, an Aboriginal Medical Service was established on North Stradbroke Island by the island’s Housing Association to provide the local Aboriginal community with access to primary health care. Their aim was to improve the overall well-being of the Aboriginal community of the Quandamooka region. This Aboriginal Medical Service became incorporated as Yulu-Burri-Ba Aboriginal Corporation for Community Health in 1994 under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 (Commonwealth).
Since the early 1980’s Yulu-Burri-Ba has continued to grow. In 2011 Yulu-Burri-Ba extended its medical services and opened a clinic at Capalaba. In 2014, Yulu-Burri-Ba commenced construction to expand and refurbish the North Stradbroke Island clinic. In 2016, Yulu-Burri-Ba also opened a clinic at Wynnum.
These increased facilities will ensure Yulu-Burri-Ba can deliver improved medical and allied health services to the Aboriginal community of North Stradbroke Island and Brisbane’s Bayside suburbs.
Yulu-Burri-Ba offers a comprehensive health care service that extends beyond the doctor’s surgery. Every effort is made to deliver innovative ways of working with the community to improve the health outcomes of Aboriginal families. Yulu-Burri-Ba has a social health team providing emotional wellbeing through women and men’s support groups. It also delivers fitness and training programs to promote healthy lifestyles and works with the Dunwich State School ‘before and after school clubs’ to encourage healthy eating and social activities for local kids.
Over 60 people are employed at Yulu-Burri-Ba. They provide best practice, safe and effective medical services to the community in two AGPAL and ISO accredited clinics.
The meaning of Yulu-Burri-Ba
The Aboriginal people of Stradbroke Island and Moreton island were described by the Aboriginal tribes of the mainland as Yoolooburrabee* (Yulu-Burri-Ba), which is the people of the sand and water.
This recalls a tribute to the many freshwater springs ever flowing and the many lakes of freshwater which abound on the two named islands and the profusion of sand hills which are habitat and breeding grounds on which the tribe subsisted and the waters of the surrounding sea.
