Yass Lawn Tennis Club

The club was formed as the Yass Lawn and Quoits Club in 1898 and was previously located right next to the hospital where there was just one court.

The number of members grew quickly as the sport of tennis was becoming more and more popular around the world and one court could no longer accommodate, so another two went in.

The first clubhouse was built of rough bush posts with tarred top and sides. This clubhouse lasted until the location was sold to the hospital in the 1920s.

The club then moved to its present site, Fifield Lane, and a new clubhouse was up by 1931.

Today there are around 20 playing members who meet every Saturday afternoon for a few hours of social but competitive tennis.

Unlike other courts around Yass, the surface is ‘loam’. It is most similar to the clay courts that you would see at the French Open.
