Yarra Road Primary School

Yarra Road Primary School began in a single classroom amongst the native flora of its current site in 1925. Miss Alice G. Broad was appointed as the first teacher of the school. In 1948, the school residence was built. Yarra Road continued as a single-teacher school until 1958, when a second classroom was opened.

The school's enrolments gradually increased between the 1960s and 1990s. In the early 2000s, a two-stage building program gave the school a long awaited upgrade.

In August 2004, a fire destroyed four of the older classrooms. Outstanding work from the Wonga Park CFA prevented the fire from spreading. With great support from our neighbouring schools and businesses, the school set out to replace the lost classrooms and replace the resources that had been built up over many years. The people of Yarra Road showed their community spirit as they all worked feverishly to get the school operational again.

Beginning in 2009 and completed in 2011, the school was further enhanced by the construction of the Bruce Bower 21st Century Learning Centre as part of the Commonwealth Government's 'Building the Education Revolution' program. The Bower Centre features flexible learning spaces and facilities for learning technologies for our students. The building was named for Mr Bruce Bower, Principal from 2004 to 2012. Mrs Kate Perkins is currently serving as Acting Principal.

Yarra Road Primary School now boasts an enrolment of 365. We proudly continue to provide quality education, sporting and social experiences for its students and community. Our motto, 'Enjoying the Road to Success', encapsulates the history, culture, achievements and hopes for the future of all students, staff and community members who have made Yarra Road Primary School the school it is today and will continue to be in the future.
