More about Woolamai Beach SLSC

The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club offer a wide range of opportunities for members including:

- Life Saving Services
The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club services an area of approximately 101.5 square kilometers; arguably the largest single surf life saving precinct in Australia with 98 kilometers of coastline. Volunteer lifesavers patrol at Woolamai Beach each weekend over the Summer period.

During the peak Summer holiday period, Woolamai Beach also hosts Victoria's largest professional Lifeguard Scheme. The Professional Lifeguards are recruited from the volunteer ranks and bolster the existing services to provide beach patrols at Woolamai Beach, Smiths Beach, and the Cowes Beach seven days a week.

In addition to the traditional beach patrols, the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club has recently launched a Marine Rescue Service.

- Competition
Competition helps life savers maintain their skills and ensures that they are primed throughout the year for their life saving work. Honing skills and maintaining fitness cannot be underestimated, especially when the lives of children, young people and families depend on them.

Competition also assists in raising community awareness for the holiday community, thereby reinforcing the beach safety messages the Club promotes and instilling confidence in visitors and tourists.

The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club competes with other surf clubs from around Australia and is proud to have won a number of major titles and awards in recent years.

- Juniors ("Nippers")
Positive values and role models for our young people are an essential part of developing strong and responsible communities. Surf life saving offers options for young people to mix with others, to learn new skills and to model themselves on others who continue to make invaluable contributions to their community.

Growing the leaders of tomorrow is a challenge for all communities and surf life saving offers a unique option for young people to develop leadership skills.

Developing a healthy island community means making sure its young people have challenges, good friends, positive role models and a vision for the community of the future. Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club continues to lead the field through its Nippers program and is an integral player in the team that helps develop the community of Phillip Island.

- Community Events
The Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club runs a number of major community events that help to raise the profile of the Club and increase awareness about its work on Phillip Island. The events bring together other community groups and contribute significantly to the Island's economy.

Community events also give the Club an opportunity to showcase its skills and its talented people, such as in the Channel Challenge swim. The tidal nature of the event means inevitably one or two swimmers need to be assisted from the water. The community is able to see first hand how the Club ensures the safety of the event, the boats and resources it has and the speed with which it is able to respond to swimmers.
