Governor Philip Gidley King, the 3rd Governor of NSW was granted a substantial land grant by his successor Governor William Bligh (Mutiny on the Bounty) on his departure to England due to ill health.
Werrington House is situated on the last remaining near 5 acres of this original land holding.
In 1826 Mary King, the youngest child of Governor King married Robert Copland Lethbridge in England. They emigrated to Australia shortly thereafter.
Mary's personal land grant of 691 acres was added to by her husband with another 600 acres, ensuring the estate was 1291 acres in total.
"He will build on the third rise of ground from the old stock yard, where your father (Governor King) proposed building....... and will be a pretty situation. He builds with stone which is found in great quantities on the range of hills near it". An extract from a letter written by Harriet King in 1829 - noting the beginning of building works at Werrington House. The house was completed in 1832 and the Georgian design was based on the Lethbridge family home 'Madford' in Cornwall.
