Weightymates – weighted products for special needs. Weightymates offers handmade products such as weighted lap pads, weighted blankets, catch bags, weighted creatures, finger mazes and more. Available in a variety of styles and materials in plain and patterned fabric, including Licensed character fabrics, and all are handwashable, and feature double stitched hems for peace of mind. Gift Certificates are also available.
Why weighted products? Weighted items provide proprioceptive input (body position awareness) through deep pressure, calming the central nervous system, and can also help with improving focus and concentration. They can help improve attention in the classroom, doing homework, or during therapies. They can be used in many other settings too, such as: helping to reduce hyperactivity during car travel, eating at the dinner table, even helping to relax watching tv. They can help children and adults with a range of disorders such as Autism, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Angelmans Syndrome, or any person with sensory needs. The elderly also find the calming effect quite comforting.
Of course, the effects will vary with each person. Research suggests that weighted items should start at approximately 5-10% of the person’s bodyweight for optimum results – though some people will benefit with much more weight. Your specialist will be able to guide you regarding your requirements. Although there is no evidence to suggest using weighted items for long periods is detrimental, suggested use is for approximately 20-30 minutes at a time, with a break of similar time between each use if possible, for best results. Weighted items should be used correctly, and under adult supervision, for safety. Due to the nature of these products, being filled with small beads, all items are recommended for individuals with a cognitive age of 3 years+.
