Gottlieb Biedermann is a highly successful business man. When a stranger comes to his house, asking for a little humanity, Gottlieb allows her to stay. His wife and maid don't trust this stranger, but Gottlieb is convinced his kindness will not be unnoticed. With arsonists lurking around, Gottlieb is certain that being kind and trusting is the only way to extinguish evil. Even when that evil knocks on the door.
