More about The Tiny Room

Tuition in piano and songcraft allows for any student to start their journey in becoming self-expressive. Piano skills are taught so that a student can have an instrument with which to display a set of creative ideas. The idea is for a student to have a wide selection of expressive skills at their hands, not to become a stunning piano player. Let them become creative individuals who have piano as one of their skills.

Weekly tasks will be set, but not all of those relate to piano skills. Some tasks are related to song analysis, song appreciation, aural training, lyric construction, and much more. All task will help the student identify themselves, and help them towards having creative output.

The journey of each of the students will be markedly different to each other, and their output will reflect that. Some will want to record their material, some will perform, others will just compose. Performance isn't suitable to all students, and that needs to be respected. However, there are many other options with which to display creative output.

All students will gradually build a portfolio of work over time. Whilst they're building this, they'll have a journal they'll use repeatedly in which they'll record all of their ideas, thoughts, snippets of lyrics or melodies, artwork, favourite songs, important images, and so on. This journal will contain the building blocks of their portfolio.

No experience is necessary, although any experience is welcome. If the student has no piano at home, this is no issue. Any task set will take into account whether there's an instrument at home or not. Practice on a piano or keyboard between lessons would be ideal, but if this can't happen, it shouldn't hold up progress - remember that they don't need to be great players, they need to be great creators!

All lessons are one-on-one with the tutor. Each student will have an individual program tailored to their needs and wants. This will continue to be re-assessed by the tutor as the journey for each individual progresses.
