The Owl and the Elephant Cafe sits in the centre of Uraidla, just 20 minutes from the city, an outstandingly beautiful area known for cool climate produce. Cherry, apple, pear and walnut orchards climb the hillsides among strawberry, rhubarb and raspberry fields. Leeks, beetroot, lettuce and cabbages are grown through the Piccadilly Valley between vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.
The guiding principle of this cafe is to make delicious food from this very local produce at an affordable price for local people and anyone curious enough to venture up the hill. It currently operates as a pop-up cafe in a former factory until the building is sold, but hopes to have a life beyond that.
More than anything else the Owl and the Elephant is driven by a deep green ethos which has meant that the entire fit out is from recycled furniture and kitchenware either diverted from landfill, sourced from charity shops or begged and borrowed from supporters in the community. This has resulted in a funky, eclectic space which is welcoming to everyone and has the potential to surprise and delight beyond your expectations.
