More about The Historic Rosevale Retreat Hotel

The Historic Rosevale Retreat Hotel is one of Queensland's Oldest Hotels. Built in 1852 as a Homestead, Liquor was readily available to travelers. The earliest records would indicate that a victuallers license was granted in 1887 to a Matthew Carmody.

The Historic Rosevale Retreat Hotel was built in that era where there were no formed roads, no electricity, no motor vehicles or phones, and today it stands a living reminder of those times.

The hotel was built on the banks of Black Gully Creek just one mile from its present site. In those days this was an ideal spot, but in 1893, the year of the great flood, which saw most of the area awash with water, a plan was put in place to move this large building diagonally across land to its present site.

The plan took five years to achieve and in 1898 two bullock teams were in the area and this massive move took place. Each team consisted of fourteen very large shorthorn bullocks, a Mr. Sam Denman and a Mr. N Bails were in charge of each team. There were four long haul wagons placed under the building, the bullocks were yolked in tandem, and the massive move commenced. This took five days to complete and during that time the Hotel was being moved trading never ceased.

The Historic Rosevale Retreat Hotel began its life in the 19th century and as it stands today in the 21st century it's a living reminder of a time that for many only exists in history books.

Shaded by its century old English Elms, the Hotel remains a living museum to the past, where over the centuries, thirsty locals and travelers alike came to breast the bar in search of a cooling drink.

We hope you enjoyed an authentic slice of Australian hospitality and a trip back in time to the days of pioneers and a world with a pace much slower than we know it today.
