Taijiquan is a centuries old Chinese self-defense discipline and is known in China as “Supreme Ultimate Boxing” and indeed is a powerful martial art. Its theory and practice embrace many of the principals of Chinese philosophy.
Taijiquan training benefits a person’s physical and mental health by emphasizing relaxation, inner calmness and deep breathing. Taijiquan is often also known as “Moving Meditation.”
Taijiquan may be called an art in which one learns how to yield & is the art of softness containing hardness, of a needle concealed in cotton to ultimately in the Taijiquan tradition (si liang bo qian jin), “four ounces deflect a thousand pounds”.
If you want to find out where in the end, the purpose lies, it is to increase longevity and extend one’s years ( yi shou yan nian ), a springtime of youth.
The gentle extended flowing movements of Taijiquan are practiced in circular patterns, and are designed to increase a person’s vital energy (qi) flow, improve balance, strengthen the body and internal organs, while regulating the nervous system.
The development of vital energy flow (qi) is achieved at commencement of each class by use of Qi Gong exercises providing a boost of energy.
The Tai Chi style taught is the Traditional Yang Style 108 Long Form which after the Chen Style is the oldest and most popular of the 5 major Tai Chi Styles. It is the most frequently seen in the media.
One thing distinguishes Taijiquan from most other forms of exercise – age is no barrier and you will only get better with practice.
