More about Springbok Delights

Springbok Delights was founded in 2000 by Reon and Lyndie Wilsenach, who came to Australia in 1997 and soon realised there was a need for proper South African delicacies such as Biltong and Boerewors amongst the home-sick South African ex-pats.

We opened our butchery in Lane Cove, Sydney specialising in South African style meat cuts and marinated products like Sosaties, Texan Steaks and of course Biltong and Boerewors. We also stocked a range of imported grocery items such as Mrs Ball’s chutney, All Gold tomato sauce, Ouma Rusks and Koeksisters. From the start we made customer service our focus and most of our customers are to this day our friends (like my mate Steve who came up with the name for the shop!)

Word of Springbok Delights and our products quickly spread and before long we had a very loyal customer base, most of whom we still serve! Supplying a few restaurants and shops with Biltong and Boerewors, it quickly grew into a separate wholesale business and today we supply over 80 shops, deli’s and restaurants in and around Sydney as well as a few interstate.

The Lane Cove premises soon became too small and we were unable to cope with production demands for our Biltong, Drywors and Boerewors. In September 2006 we opened The Biltong Man, our factory in Mascot from where we manufacture all our Boerewors and Air-dried beef products. We also age all our own beef at this HACCP accredited facility to ensure consistency in the product we sell in our shops.

In 2003 we opened another store, African Delights, in Round Corner, Dural, to serve our clientele in the Hills area.

A family business from day one, we were joined by Reon’s sister Inge in 2007 to manage the administrative side of the business and head up new projects.

In July 2007 we bought the Fruit and Veg business next door to us and renovated both shops. In September 2007 we opened the doors to our brand new store that includes a state of the art gourmet butchery, a cellar with arguably the biggest range of South African beer, wine and sprits in NSW (if not Australia), a fresh Fruit and Veg department and of course loads of imported South African groceries.

Our team at Springbok Delights are very involved with the South African community, attending and catering for South African supporter’s get togethers and other events. Springbok Delights was the main sponsor for SAvents, an event management company that recently hosted a Tri-Nations bash at Ryan’s Bar in the city with great success. Being the first of many, we look forward to many more such events in future.

Due to our good supporter’s base, we also advertise all upcoming events in our shops with great success.
