More about SPOT Festival

The SPOT International Student Theatre Festival was founded in 2007 with the aim of interceding contact among drama students in Romania and the neighbouring countries according to a basic principle of the theatrical art: coming together. The festival has since consistently promoted multiculturalism, offering future actors, while still in school, a particular background to express themselves, and the people of Carei, who live in a town without a professional theatre, the opportunity for watching various performances as well as meeting outstanding personalities of both the Romanian and the international stage.
As one of a kind in Romania, the event has become a reference point for the national theatrical movement, turning the Municipality of Carei into a fringe space able to precipitate the future values of the Romanian stage. This is especially because, when it comes to THEATRE, more than in any other cultural area, immediate contact is imperative as a survival condition and as a token for the quality of the future theatrical approach.

The last editions had as guests students from acting departments within Drama Schools in Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureş, Craiova, Bucharest, Timisoara while from abroad we received students from Kaposvar (Hungary), Novi Sad (Serbia), Burghausen (Germany), Bern (Switzerland), London (United Kongdom).
In order to make our contribution to the professional future of the students, a series of lectures by representatives of some independent theatres in the country took place all along these former editions, as well as workshops.
Accomplishing a festival of this sort has proved to be both necessary and useful considering the following points:

1. It is essential that one should offer drama students an exclusive place where they might get better acquainted with each other, where they would come first, where everything could be entirely about them;

2. There have always been talks concerning differences in method specific to various Drama Schools and, therefore, the festival has become a good opportunity to define such contrasts. There have also taken place debates upon the particularities of Hungarian and Romanian theatrical traditions. The festival has helped settling some of the issues since, revolving around multiculturalism, it shows performances in Romanian, Hungarian and German as well;

3. For those of the students who have not yet been exposed to larger audiences, Carei represents a promising and timely start thanks to the easy-going, informal environment. This provides a certain degree of protective sensitivity with regard to them, as the public – whether they be local theatre goers or colleagues from other Drama Schools – have never turned possible shortcomings into reasons for disparaging observation. Moreover, the festival is valuable for it inspires the inhabitants of Carei with a natural frame of mind in terms of art and culture.
