If you're new to flexibility training, I urge you to take a Stretch to Your Limits class or a one-on-one session. Though it can be tough to take that first step, it almost always winds up being worth it. Having an instructor there is person adds of lot to the training. You'll receive guidance, encouragement and lots of useful cues about things you may have overlooked. You may also make new friends who share your interest. Additionally, the structure of the class will help you adhere to longer periods of intense stretching.
