More about Sister to Sister Birthing

Asalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu,

My name is Umm Omar. I currently live in Sydney Australia. I reverted to Islam in 2001. My passions in life are attaining Islamic knowledge, my children and offering comfort and care through childbirth to my beloved sisters in Islam. When I became Muslim I understood that I inherited many many sisters from all around the world and I finally felt I found that large family I always wanted. I am always trying to think of ways to connect with my sisters and offer them my help. Over the last 7 years I have been asked by several different sisters in I would attend their births. I was honoured that they asked and of course I accepted. I found that the births were an amazing experience and one that brought me closer to Allah. I also realised that a labouring woman needs to be focused and not have to worry about anything else except remembrance of Allah and the delivery of the gift He has given her. I tried to facilitate that for her and found that I was able to benefit them in ways that they would be forever thankful. Then not so long ago I met an amazing sister who was referred to as "The Muslim Doula" this was because at the time among our community it was a strange thing indeed people thought, a doula?? How do I pronounce that? and what do they do?
Well let me explain The word 'doula' — pronounced 'doo-la' — is a Greek word meaning 'woman servant or caregiver'. More recently, it refers to someone who offers emotional and physical support to a woman before, during and after childbirth. A doula (also known as a birth attendant) believes in 'mothering the mother'. After getting to know The Muslim Doula. I witness her passion for birth coupled with her passion to help her sisters and I decided to enroll in the course she was running. I thought if I continue to assist my sisters in birth why not learn from the best and at the time I had the support part working OK but had no idea of hospitals rules and regulations, signs to be aware of, herbal/natural pre and post natal care and much more. I completed my course at the end of 2015 and I am now a graduate of Nakhlah Childbirth International and now I have all the added tools I need to assist my sisters in their birth experience. I am opening this page to connect with my sisters near and far and I ask Allah that He blesses me in my endeavours and allows me to assist my sisters to the best of my abilities.

To all my sisters who I love for the sake of Allah.

Barak Allahu feekun
