More about Sauerbier House Culture AIR

This is a page run by the current Artists In Resident of Sauerbier House. Its goal is to help the public and the artists to connect with each other and for artist to have a sense of the place in a larger cultural context and also with regard to the traditional Kaurna lands surrounding Sauerbier House.

Members of the public are encouraged to visit the AIR and their studios. Each artist has their own way of responding to their residency and it is hoped that this page will be a place where you can see a diverse archive of the evolving and transforming interplay between AIRs and local people.

BACKGROUND (from Onkaparinga web site):

Sauerbier House is an innovative artspace providing a platform to support cultural exchange through contemporary visual arts. Situated on the bank of the Onkaparinga River or Ngangkiparingga, (‘Women’s River’; Kaurna), the colonial villa is a state heritage community asset transformed from domestic residence (originally George Sauerbier c.1897), into a centre that supports and promotes contemporary arts practice and creative cultural expression within this region.

Sauerbier House offers established and emerging contemporary artists and writers, site responsive residency (non-resident) and independent exhibition opportunities. The extended residencies provide a platform for arts practitioners to creatively respond to a complex and culturally significant coastal location. Interactions with other residents, locals and visitors are offered through regular studio sessions, artist’s talks or workshops.

Each residency extends over three calendar months with artists/writers to apply via an expression of interest process. Applications are open in July each year. The programme is overseen by a reference group consisting of arts industry professionals, local and cultural representatives. The panel endorses a transparent selection process and helps guide the programming to authentically represent contemporary art within our community.

[GRAFTd] exhibitions run concurrent to the residency program offering exhibition opportunities for emerging and established local or visiting contemporary visual artists, researchers, students or arts collective and provide an ideal stage to experiment with works in progress, mid degree research concepts or to exhibit new or previously unseen bodies of work.

For visitors, Sauerbier House provides an opportunity to experience the often unseen processes of an artist at work, to participate in workshops or to simply enjoy contemporary artwork in a colonial setting.

Sauerbier House is dedicated to the creation of living cultural dialogues and local creative exchanges.
