Augusta - Points of Interest
Augusta is all about taking it easy on long walks over unspoilt beaches, along to the mouth of the magnificent river or through to the town and out to the fields of wildflowers. See the sights at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia constructed back in 1894, and marvel at the panoramic views of where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. Take a guided tour around Jewel Cave - the largest show cave in WA - or head to The Little Pinnacles to spy the stromatolites around the bay from Skippy Rock. Hop on a cruise up the river to watch dolphins and birdlife play or enjoy a little history at the museum on Blackwood Ave.

Augusta-Margaret River History
The Augusta-Margaret River area is full of history. Augusta and just around the corner is Flinders Bay where Matthew Flinders dodged the shoals to make a landing during his circumnavigation of Australia. The French were actively exploring the coast at the time, and many coastal landmarks bear the names of French captains or their ships. Nestled where the Blackwood River emerges into Flinders Bay.

Augusta is an area of stunning natural beauty loved by holiday homeowners and retirees alike for its cooler climate, pristine waterways as well as acre upon acre of bush and farmland. Named after the daughter of King George III, Princess Augusta Sophia, this town 130km south of Perth is a haven for any adventurer willing to take the four-hour long road past tall karri trees and long sandy beaches down to the farthest south-west corner of the continent. Or just fly to Busselton and drive an hour! So easy.

Every day in Augusta - a joy!
Over a week you could have a picnic lunch or barbeque in a different spot each day - at one of the beautiful spots like Hamelin Bay, amid the karri forest bisected by Boranup Drive, at the Rotary Park which commemorates the working class people who became farmers in the 1920s resettlement scheme and so many more. Whale Watching in Finders Bay Augusta
Each year Humpback and Southern Right whales make the long journey from Antarctica to the warm pristine waters of the Margaret River region. Flinders Bay in Augusta is the "first port of call" for many whales that come to feed, breed and play from June to September. Whale watching here is a very unique experience because it’s one of the few places in the world where you can observe Southern Right and Humpback whales interacting.

Some of the most beautiful Caves in the world
The Mammoth, Lake and Jewel Caves are all within 21 kilometres of Augusta – so close and well worth seeing.
The Augusta Margaret River region offers visitors some of the most unique and stunning cave experiences in Australia. Along the spine of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge and beneath soaring karri forest lie more than 150 caves. These caves belong to a series of complex and fragile karst systems, which are landscapes, formed by the rapid drainage of water underground. Karst systems are characterised most often by caves, dolines (large holes), blind valleys, sinking streams and springs. The main road that travels along the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge is aptly named Caves Road.

The Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association operates three spectacular show caves; Lake, Mammoth and Jewel. These caves are easily accessible, each with their own story to tell and decorated with their own unique and dazzling formations. Lake, Mammoth and Jewel caves are open to the public every day of the year, with the exception of Christmas Day. Tour times vary with self guided and guided options available plus a range of on-site catering available. Extra tours are offered during peak periods.

In September 2012 the magnificent Moondyne Cave reopened to the public after ten years, offering visitors an intimate, exclusive caving experience. Participants wear overalls, gloves and helmets for a three hour experience by torchlight. Tours operate on Wednesday and Saturday from June to December 15, 2012. Located in the Jewel Cave precinct, tours of Moondyne Cave are completed with a lunch at the stunning Jewel Cafe.

Passionate guides who have a wealth of experience and knowledge lead tours of the caves. When on tour you are in safe hands, as our guides know these sites intimately. All guides carry current senior first aid certificates and receive comprehensive ongoing training. On tour you will learn many fascinating facts about the sites and our guides will ensure that you have a fun memorable experience.

Boating
You can hire fishing dinghies, windsurfers, surf cats on the Ellis Street foreshore or launch your own boat the boat ramps in either Augusta or Hamelin Bay.

Fishing
Within walking distance of the Riverside Cottages you will find a fisherman’s jetty – or try your luck anywhere on the Blackwood River. More keen anglers will cast into the ocean at places like Skippy Rock near the Leeuwin lighthouse.

Surfing and Diving
Ask any serious surfer anywhere in the world if he or she has heard of Margaret River and we'd put money on it that they have. For nearly 40 years surfers have travelled across Australia and from around the world to take on the world-class waves of this renowned region. Margaret River's Surfers Point is home to the Telstra Drug Aware Pro Margaret River, which is usually held around March-April. With over 75 top class surf breaks spread over 130 kilometres of pristine coastline from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin, surfers are absolutely spoiled for choice.

This corner of the Indian Ocean is blessed with some of the cleanest water anywhere and the madding crowds of other surf regions around the world will become just a memory. Year-round the powerful ground swells generated in the notorious Roaring Forties 1000 kilometres to the south of Cape Leeuwin march north-east and meet with the reefs and beaches of the region. The result is some of the most consistent, spectacular, high-quality surf anywhere on earth. The ocean temperature varies little throughout the year and therefore those hunting the ultimate wave can surf here at any time.

The biggest and most spectacular surf hits the coast in winter and spring, however summer and autumn also offer consistent swells. It is very rare to find the ocean flat for more than a few days, even in summer. There is a wide variety of breaks offering varying difficulty, and a number of small beach breaks that are perfect for inexperienced surfers and novices. Several surf schools exist in the area and a surf lesson is a great fun way to spend a day when visiting the region. To surf the waves of this region is the goal of surfers the world over. Come and experience the ultimate surf safari in the Augusta Margaret River region!

Eat, Drink and be Merry
It has been a mere 45 years since the first vines were planted, but near perfect growing conditions have enabled Margaret River to quickly become recognised as one of the world's great fine wine regions.
