What is a Doula?
The word ‘Doula’ is a Greek word that has come to mean ‘woman’s servant’ or as I like to define it “to mother the mother’’. A Doula (or birth attendant) is someone who provides physical and emotional care and support to women and her family during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.
Differing to a midwife, a Doula supports pregnancy, birth and beyond with non-medicalised care, indepth knowledge and experience based on broad, long-standing research and evidence-based information. Our very special role is to help parents obtain a deep and solid understanding of childbirth and help them through the journey by providing evidence based information, education, referral and support to women and her partner.
Beyond the incredible experience I felt birthing my own daughter with the help of aid of woman skilled with birthing, and feeling that this was a gift that I wanted to further share with other birthing parents, the more I researched into it, the more I came to the understanding that being a Doula unequivocally enhances positive birthing outcomes.
