Phil Gray has been training cutting horses for himself and the public for some thirty years. After a childhood trail riding atop horses in Sydney's northern beaches and some time in the rodeo arena, Phil became hooked on cutting after the purchase of his first cutter from Graham Lamey in the eighties.
While he always branched-out into multiple western disciplines, Phil always focused on cutting and has over the years had a highly decorated non pro and professional career in the NCHA. Some of his highlights are listed below -
NCHA Non Pro Derby CHAMPION
Multiple NCHA Non Pro Futurity finalist and placegetter
DDCC Non Pro Futurity RESERVE CHAMPION
Multiple NCHA Open Futurity finalist
NCHA Open Derby finalist
LTE - $70,000+
While training and showing has always been the focal point, Phil and wife Lauren have developed one of the most sought-after broodmare lines in Australia upon corner-stone mare and 1989 NCHA Open Futurity finalist Miss Sonita Bud (dec August '14). Today, Miss Sonita Bud and her daughters have amassed GET earnings nearing $100,000. The breeding program is known as TPG Cutting Horses.
Before cutting however, Phil spent time studying the art of saddlery in Sydney and has operated as a largely-known and well respected craftsman for nearly four decades. He has worked for Hiscock's Saddlery and Marsh Carney, and now operates his own workshop from home in Moonbi.
