Mt Lindesay Ethical Farmers

We are a group of Denmark farmers who share a holistic approach to agriculture. Our aim is to facilitate the sustainability of growing produce locally and supplying the highest quality at affordable prices.
Our core values are:-
An ethical and respectful approach to animal husbandry
Concern for the welfare of animals is central to our principles - this applies throughout the animal's life including slaughter. In practical terms this means that :-
Normal animal behaviour is encouraged by providing natural shelter belts for protection from the elements and large paddocks with mixed and clean grazing (which help keep down parasite-related problems).
Movement and handling of animals is performed in a calm and caring manner.
Recognising that routine drug use weakens an animal’s immune system, we aim to keep animals in good condition by using a positive organic/biodynamic management approach to health and welfare. If disease does occur then natural and complementary therapies are encouraged. If these are not appropriate then veterinary medicines may be used (the statutory withholding period will be at least doubled before the meat is sold).
We use an organic abattoir where slaughter systems are designed and managed to ensure livestock are not caused unnecessary distress.

Regenerative landscape stewardship
This is about making a commitment to the land and recognising that our farms are just part of our greater environment - we therefore strive to enhance and preserve it for today and tomorrow by :-
Using environmental/organic/biological/biodynamic farming practices which ensure the ongoing viability of our farmland.
Maintaining and extending native bush for wildlife habitat.
Caring for waterways by maintaining vegetative buffers and providing alternate water sources for stock.
Improving the economic viability of farming in our region thereby helping to ensure its continued rural usage.

A principled approach to customers and fellow members
Our philosophy is based on treating each other, our community and our customers with integrity & fairness. For example we will :-
Be open and honest with customers.
Share our knowledge with each other and anyone who is interested to learn more about our methods.
Hold an "open farm" event once a year and welcome visits from customers at other times.
Adopt the "Sunlight Test" - this test assumes our customers are watching how we operate. So if we wouldn't do it in front of you - we don't do it!

Prices - Sept 2014:
Lamb/hogget $12.50 per kilo, Mutton $10 per kilo - available as half or whole animal, cuts prepared & packaged locally by Reeves Butchers ready for your freezer. Approx weight for whole lamb = 20 kilos.
