Melton South Community Centre

We are a Neighbourhood House and Adult Education Centre situated in the DJ Cunningham Centre next to the Mt Canberry Park in Melton South.

We have been operating in Melton South for over 27 years and have been providing the Melton community with a wide variety of courses and classes, suitable for every member of the family such as:

Computer classes for the complete beginner.

Bookkeeping and MYOB.

Languages such as Japanese, Korean and AUSLAN (Australian Sign L:anguage).

There are several taster courses each term. These give students an idea if they wish to continue onto an accredited certificate course. The taster courses are for the beauty industry, baking and pastry, floristry, hairdressing, fashion design and dressmaking.

For the musically inclined we offer both acoustic and electric guitar as well as keyboards. These are suitable for children and adults.

There are many hobby and leisure classes including photography, soap and soy candles, mosaics, beaded jewellery and painting We also have Latin and Ballroom dancing, yoga and Brazilian cardio fusion.

There are accredited courses for food handling, RSA, CPR, First Aid, First Aid for Child Care Workers, anaphylaxis and emergency management of asthma.

We have many beauty courses available including Indian head massage, professional make-up made easy, deluxe facials, body waxing, lashes and brows, French manicure and pedicure, express lashes &smoky eyes, shellac and easy acrylic nails.

Our cooking classes include cheese making, French macaroons, cupcake decorating, cake decorating and 2 tier chocolate ganache

The building belongs to the City of Melton and is leased to us to conduct the centre.

We have a Committee of Management made up of eight members of the community and a Centre Manager. We employ a Program Coordinator, Administrative Supervisor and Assistant. At various time of year we have a Work for the Dole person in the office as well. We employ many local residents tutors in out classes.

Our funding comes from DHHS for Neighbourhood House coordination. ACFE (Learn Local) for many of the computer and trade courses. Fee for service for all classes. The City of Melton for various projects and the premises.

We have two playgroups, Koori Kids and a supported playgroup (free to those with a Health Care Card) which is funded by the City of Melton.

We rent out of premises to other group and corporations. This enables us to get extra income to help pay some of the neverending bills.

We are always on the lookout for new ideas for courses, classes and support groups and are constantly asking our community to give us their ideas and feedback on how we can help them.
