More about Scoliosis Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists are all trained in both the Schroth Method of scoliosis exercise and education as well as Pilates. We aim to achieve spinal stabilisation, improved posture and function through scoliosis specific exercises, postural strengthening and functional movement training.

Our recommendations for management follow the guidelines produced by the International Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT).

All Scoliosis Physiotherapy clients have a thorough Initial Assessment. This involves a postural assessment, lung function assessment, X-ray assessment, functional movement assessment and complete quality of life questionnaires. We meticulously record assessment measures before and after a course of treatment to monitor effects. Letters are written to Orthopaedic Specialists and other health care providers involved in the clients management to communicate findings, outcomes and treatment plans and to encourage a team approach.

Scoliosis Physiotherapy treatment recommendations depend on the individual requirements found in the Initial Assessment. Recommendations also consider whether clients are at high or low risk of curve progression, whether they are in pain or not and whether past scoliosis surgeries are present. There is an “Immersion Program” option for adolescent clients that maximises learning efficiency and also a weekly “Group training” option that has considerable psychological benefits (as participants meet others who share the condition) and the advantage of regular supervision and support towards independent exercise.

All our practitioners are passionate about scoliosis and have travelled internationally to gain qualification in the Schroth Method. We work as a close team and take pride in knowledge sharing with each other and the client to gain the best outcomes.
