Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers

Melaleuca Surfside Backpackers is a purpose built, owner operated, architecturally designed retreat set on 6 acres of natural bushland five minutes walk from the sparkling waters of One Mile Beach in spectacular Port Stephens.

Created using wood and glass to maximise harmony with nature Melaleuca was the dream of Michael and his brother Chris after travelling the world for a number of years.
The whole process began when the brothers purchased the land in 1996, after an exhaustive 5 year search for land close to the beach, as far South as The Great Ocean Road to Fraser Island in the North.
We utilised the skills of Michael & Michelle and Chris & Helen to build the business from the ground up and opened to guests in 1998, Chris and Helen left in December 2003 to expand their family and Peter and Jeanette, friends of Michael's, moved up from Melbourne to become small business owners, they too left in 2012.

Melaleuca is a "Land for Wildlife" property and home to a large variety of native creatures, many animals and birds have lived here for many years - this was something we considered when building and kept every tree on the property; visitors will have seen all the trees through the decks, we aim to promote an eco-friendly environment, for not only our human guests but all the others that inhabit the grounds.
Michelle is a licensed native wildlife carer with Hunter Wildlife/Native Animal Trust Fund, and aims to promote education of the creatures we are privileged to share our land with, if you are lucky you may meet a possum or macropod, wild Koala's can also be seen on site 364 days a year.

Accommodation available includes "free range" camping (you choose your own space) on our CAR FREE campground, shaded Kombi van sites, Tent hire where everything is provided (Spring/Summer months only), 6 share dorm room and 4 share cabins that can also be taken as doubles or singles. Our new Dormitory the Bird Cage is a 25 bed facility specifically for Tour Group Companies.

All guests have use of the facilities including Free BBQ's, the magnificent Main Building houses double Kitchens with all the crockery and implements one needs to cook up a great feast. Lounge area with Free WIFI and large decks with ample table and chairs to relax upon. Laundry and naturally Toilets and Showers.

Not only do we provide accommodation for weary travellers, we have an Eco Pass for Tours in Tomaree and Worimi National Parks and use our 4WD vehicles to operate Sand Dune adventure tours on the magnificent Stockton Bight, or Worimi Conservation Lands.

There is plenty to do in the area, we have 26 pristine beaches including Stockton Bight/Worimi Conservation lands, with the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, One Mile Beach with it's learn to surf waves, and Samurai Beach, one of NSW "Free Beaches" - clothing is optional here.
Port Stephens is the dolphin capital of Australia and from May to November you can witness the spectacular migration of the humpback whales with either a whale watch cruise, or try your luck land based whale watching in Anna Bay.
