I grew up with Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird (I even had a record 'Big Bird sings the blues') and I can still remember their escapades and what they taught me. I have seen many feeble attempts to use puppets in children's programs where every rule of puppetry was broken and characters were robotically reading off lines, in a word - BORING, and spent the entire time star gazing at the ceiling.
I believe if youth workers and leaders are serious about their message and want to engage their audiences using puppets, then they ought to invest time, energy, and money into getting quality puppets and training.
