More about Mazenod Avila Theatre Company

Mazenod has a long tradition of producing a musical each year. The tradition started in 1981 by Fr Pat Moroney OMI, one of the previous Rectors of the college and director of the first 3 musicals. Then in 1983, some students from Avila joined the production of 'The Witness' and since then, students from Years 10 to 12 at Avila have combined with Mazenod students to present some very professional and entertaining musicals. From then on Mr Ken Nailon has directed the production. In the first three musicals students mainly combined with staff in presenting the musical.

It is amazing the multitude of tasks required to present a musical - singing, dancing, drama coaching, choreography, stage management and direction, costumes, lighting, make-up, sound, planning, organising, playing music, practising, stage props and sets, ticket selling, publicity, programmes, rehearsals, photography, etc. It is a tribute to staff, parents and students involved over many years that each musical did happen. It has been marvelloous to see the range of staff and students from many areas of the two Colleges involved. One key feature of our musicals has always been participation. With the cast, the band, the backstage crews and ushers, there have always been over 150 students involved each year. Add to that another 10-20 teachers and some parents and/or ex-students and it is a mammoth undertaking and we believe one enjoyed by all despite some stressful moments.

The Mazenod-Avila musicals have always provided and nurtured the musical talents of many and it is pleasing to see a number of students who have worked proffessionally in the entertainment industry as performers, script-writers, technicians and musicians. We are especially proud of them and their achievements.

Musicals and other music and drama presentation should always be part of the wider curriculum in any school. They provide oppurtunities for displaying the talents of students but also build self confidence and contribute to the education of the whole person. They are an important way of building community spirit and encouraging participation. The many musicals have always had strong support from both College's, prinicipals and staff. Long may they continue!

2012 marks the celebration of MATCO's 32nd Annual Musical production.
