More about Makoplasty Australia

What is Makoplasty?

MAKOplasty Robotic Knee Surgery is an innovative treatment option for adults needing treatment of early to mid-stage osteoarthritis.

more specifically for patients considering either:

Partial knee replacement
Total hip replacement
The approach involves the surgeon using integrated robotic technology with three- dimensional computer imaging, based on accurate CT scan imagery.

What are the advantages?

The technology enables surgeons to accurately plan partial knee or total hip replacement procedures, and allows optimal implant size, position, and alignment for each patient, as well as accurately map the areas of bone that are required to be remove. Being a minimally invasive approach, robotic orthopaedic surgery offers the following benefits:

Smaller incisions leading to reduced scarring and minimal blood loss
Reduced post-operative pain
Shorter hospital stay and recovery period
Quicker return to daily normal activities
Lower incidence of complications
The MAKOplasty® procedure

The procedure is powered by the RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System, which allows for consistently reproducible precision in performing partial knee resurfacing.

During the procedure, the diseased portion of the knee is resurfaced, sparing the patient’s healthy bone and surrounding tissue.
An implant is then secured in the joint to allow the knee to move smoothly again.

MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing can

Facilitate optimal implant positioning to result in a more natural feeling knee following surgery
Be performed on an outpatient basis
More about the system

MAKOplasty consists of a robotic arm that is perceptible to touch. It is integrated with special surgical instruments and a virtual real-time visualisation system.

The MAKOplasty system for the knee has an inbuilt virtual cutting guide, which eliminates the need for jigs and cutting blocks, making the process less invasive and more tissue sparing.
The MAKOplasty system for hip replacement surgery is designed to facilitate greater precision in cup placement and restoration of leg length.
Pre-operative planning: A computed tomography (CT) scan is taken before the surgery to create a 3D model of the affected knee joint. This helps your surgeon design a customised plan of the entire procedure before surgery, including bone preparation, resurfacing, and customisation of the size, position and orientation of the implant.

Operative guidance: Unlike a traditional surgery, this procedure is performed through small incisions. During the procedure, your unique knee joint anatomy is registered and aligned with the 3D model. Your surgeon resurfaces the diseased bone according to the pre-programmed surgical plan for a perfect fit while preserving healthy bone and surrounding tissue. The movements of your surgeon’s hand are translated by the robotic arm into precise movements of the surgical instrument held by the robotic arm. Your surgeon is in turn guided by tactile feedback, 3D visualisation and auditory guidance. This limits bone preparation to only the diseased tissue.

Guided by the MAKOplasty system, the implant isprecisely positioned and aligned. The articulation of the implant is then evaluated through entire range of motion and fine-tuned if required.

Outcomes

With the patient-specific positioning and alignment of the implant, and preservation of healthy tissue, MAKOplasty strives for a more naturally functioning knee, and thereby enabling a faster recovery and return to normal activities.
