Makans

I'm learning how to grow seasonal organic food and Makans is my urban garden. I started this project in the spring of 2014. The name Makans is a Malay word for food or to eat. When we were little and we'd ask our mum what was for dinner she would say makans :).

I plant, fertilize, harvest, and prune by the moon. I also companion plant and have my own worm farm. Learning how to grow organic food requires patience and persistence. I've also discovered that gardening and being out in nature has a grounding and healing quality as well.

I sell small amounts of produce. My philosophy is to take only as much as you need. My aim is to ensure the food I grow is eaten fresh and there is little waste. I'm also conscious of our dependence on plastics and prefer to use natural materials as well as recycle and reuse.

I'm keen to share simple, nutritious and yummy recipes with the food I grow, and hopefully inspire others to grow their own food as well. I've started saving seeds, and drying and bottling herbs and spices.

I'm also keen to build and share knowledge about growing delicious food, as well as sharing knowledge about alternative ways of living on this earth that is compassionate, respectful, sustainable and has a focus on justice.
