More about Leigh Creek Caravan Park

The Leigh Creek Caravan Park is in the small mining town of Leigh Creek, on the edge of the Northern Flinders Ranges in the beautiful South Australian Outback

The Leigh Creek Caravan Park was originally built in 1980 to accommodate contractors in the region either involved in relocation the “old” Leigh Creek, or in the production of coal. It was never designed for tourists and campers.
In the years that followed, the township of Leigh Creek South went through many changes. Once the old town was completely demolished the new town dropped the “south” name, as there was no longer a need to distinguish where the “town” was.

Between economics and technology, the town ranged from 2500 people in 1982 to around 500 in 2012. The original town was government owned and operated by ETSA until it was sold, privatised and since owned by different companies including Optima Energy, NRG, Flinders Power and Alinta Energy.

Once the mine and town were privatised, the running of the town also began to change. Outside companies began to run the local catering and hospitality industry, including the Caravan Park. Unfortunately due to the old “red tape” it was uneconomical for the caravan park to have the attention needed to make it attractive to the touring public.

On 27th of September, 2002 the Leigh Creek Progress Association took over the running of the Park, so that the tourist dollars earned could be channelled back into both the park and community.
