More about JCU Humanists

“Humanists recognize that it is only when people feel free to think for themselves, using reason as their guide, that they are best capable of developing values that succeed in satisfying human needs and serving human interests.” - Isaac Asimov

The James Cook University Humanists are affiliated with the Freethought University Alliance, a coalition of of Australian atheist, humanist, skeptic and secular campus groups.

Our club is open to everyone, whether they are a student or not; and was founded to help remove the stigma associated with non-belief and provide a social setting for like minded people. It also serves as a medium to discuss the philosophy of humanism and philosophy in general, especially seeing as philosophy is not taught at JCU. We are open to interaction and collaboration with other student and community groups, particularly those with an interest in discussing the “big questions”, promoting science and philosophy, or taking action on issues of importance.

Our monthly discussion meetings are open forums where anyone is welcome to have a say, and we regularly host film screenings, guest speakers, and meet for social events such as trivia and drinks at the Riverside Tavern. We do not eat babies, burn churches or read verses from the Satanic Bible.

Meetings are the first Monday of the month at 7pm and are held at JCU in DB27-006. Meeting topics will be announced via this website, email, Facebook and Twitter.
