More about Janome Australia

In 1921 the Pine Sewing Machine Factory, which was the first domestic Sewing Machine Manufacturer in Japan, was established.

In 1935 the JANOME brand was established and has been used as a trademark since then.

The word Janome means "eye of the snake" in Japanese. At that time, the round bobbin system was the most advanced technology replacing the traditional long shuttle type. As the new round bobbin looks like a snake's eye, JANOME was chosen as our company name. This is the symbol of our company and it is synonymous with providing advanced sewing machines to customers around the world.

Janome is a global company with sewing divisions in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Europe, Australia and New Zealand as well as agents in Africa, Central and South America and throughout the Pacific Rim of Asia.

In 1969 Janome Sewing Machine Co. (Aust) Pty Ltd was established in Australia. Janome was a relatively unknown brand within Australia at that time, but has made incredible progress and has grown to be a leader in the sewing machine field. Janome has now become a household name among Australian families where sewing is a part of family life.

In 1979, Janome marketed and sold the first computer sewing machine known as the “Memory 7”.

In 1982 the Company found it necessary to find larger premises and moved into its new head office and warehouse in Cheltenham, where a sewing school and lesson centre was also established.

In 1990, the “Memory Craft 8000” was introduced, which was the first home-use computer sewing machine in the world to possess embroidery functions. Janome’s breakthrough technology had opened up a new sewing machine market enabling users to sew with more recreational motivations.

In 2000, the “Memory Craft 10000”, which was the first sewing machine that could connect to a PC via a USB cable, was released. USB connection was pioneered in the sewing machine market.

In 2005, the new flagship model “Memory Craft 11000, incorporating robotic technology was launched offering sewers more than ever. This new sewing and embroidery machine came packed with features enabling users to undertake nearly any sewing, embroidery, quilting or home décor task imaginable.

From 1st July 2007, Janome Australia Pty Ltd became the exclusive distributor of Swiss-designed quality Elna sewing machines and steam presses. The headquarters of Elna International Inc. is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and was acquired by our parent company, Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan last year.
