The job of covering grain stacks with tarpaulins generally lasts for 5 to 10 weeks.
Tarpers are working during night as it is much cooler and safer as there is no trucks driving around. Hours are long during the busiest periods, generally starting at 8 pm and working through till morning around 7 am (often 7 days a week). During this time there are usually breaks whilst traveling between grain receival points. Workers are paid to travel both ways, to and from work.
Starting wages are $26.28 (inclusive of Super) per hour. Some days can be shorter than others, since the job of placing tarps can be influenced by weather. Generally, an average pay (after tax) is between 800 and 1100 AUD per week.
Accommodation is provided in a house free of charge, similar to hostel style accommodation and all meals are included. You will have healthy and nutritious food 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and the menu is very variable, for example lasagne, chicken pasta, BBQ, Shepards pie etc.
The work involves dragging heavy tarpaulins over large stacks of grain, sewing them together as the heap progresses along the storage, fastening them down and sealing them for fumigation. The work is only suited to those who are physically strong and fit, capable of working in a hot climate and working in teams.
As with many Australian construction contracts, there is an alcohol and drug policy which can be enforced at any time. Random drug and alcohol testing can be carried out on site at any time by the company we are contracting to. If you use drugs or cannot control your alcohol use, please do not apply! You WILL be tested before your induction and a failure means you are permanently excluded from entering a CBH site. Please be aware that recreational drugs stay in your system for up to a month, depending on usage.
Work clothing (Protective) will be supplied. You will need to purchase comfortable, ankle covering steel capped work boots.
Before commencement, all staff must watch a training video and undergo a short training session regarding work safety. They are then required to obtain a white high risk work card. This card costs $65, and is very handy for securing jobs in the future, worldwide. We have an extremely good safety record and want it to stay that way, unsafe work practices will not be tolerated!
Please be aware that since you have paid for your own flights to Australia, you need to be confident of being suitable for the job, so you can leave at the end of the contract, happy that you have made good money.
