The HME has approximately 1 km of 5" (127mm) gauge railway track on which model steam, diesel and electric trains operate. It is known as the Galston Valley Railway (GVR). There are extensive yards, a station building, unloading/loading and steaming up facilities. The track is signalled and is representative of prototype practice.
There is also a sealed traction engine track on which miniature road vehicles operate.
Picnic areas have been established for use by members and on public running days, the public.
Fees consist of a joining fee and annual membership fee.
Expenditure for capital works, maintenance and site service charges comes from public running days.
