WHM also has roots in the indigenous practices of the British Isles and ancient Roman traditions. Well-known historical physicians including Hippocrates, Galen & Paracelsus used herbal medicine in their practices. The use of various herbal formulas is one of the oldest and possibly the most widespread form of medicine.

In the 21st century, herbal medicine has been subject to much scientific evaluation, which has at often times confirmed what traditional herbalists had already advocated. Modern science has also aided in shining a light onto the hidden mysteries locked away inside medicinal herbs at the molecular level.
