Great Wheelbarrow Race

The race started in 2004 and since the onset of the event, new and innovative ways to promote and streamline the procedures to ensure growth and sustainability have been put in place - these include; electronic newsletter, 2010 saw the creation of the event DVD, which gave the race National and International exposure, both by the internet and regional news channel, Facebook page being developed as well as website page, You Tube clip online - Since the creation of the event we are growing the online presence and marketing areas and believe this is a key factor in the future sustainability of the race. The race caters for the spectators, visitors and competitors by including entertainment each night as well as providing options for tours of the region throughout the time the visitors are in the area. Footage is shown nightly of the days events on a big screen, a talent quest is held on the second night in Almaden, which brings spectators from all over, and is the biggest event in the town all year, bringing much needed funds to the area.
Fundraising has grown from $3,000 the first year of the race to $89,000 in 2010. These funds are distributed regionally, Nationally and Internationally to not for profit organizations.
