Yoga has been practiced for centuries as a spiritual practice, not necessarily always on a yoga mat. Yoga was once practiced with a guru and only if the guru accepted you as their student. Modern day yoga has simply made it more accessible to people by bringing it to communities at convenient times and venues. Yoga means "bring together" or "to join" and in the modern era we practice yoga as a path to bring mind and body together towards ultimate freedom. This can be freedom from suffering, pain or the ties that bind us in our day to day lives. Yoga, whilst often associated with the asana, the physical practice, is much much more. It encompasses meditation, asana and the way we move through life, how we treat ourselves and others. The benefits of yoga are not limited to but include: increased body awareness, stretched and lengthened muscles, stretched soft tissues of the body such as the tendons, ligaments, and the fascia, releases lactic acid build up, increased range of motion in the joints, increased muscle tone, increased endurance, improved balance and coordination. Yoga will also increases your experience of relaxation, assist with keeping you in the present moment, or mindfull, give you greater mind control and increased mental clarity. It creates a greater sense of something bigger than our selves, and fosters a deeper sense of gratitude in general, leading to a greater sense of fulfillment in our lives.
