BRIEF HISTORY OF GLASSHOUSE DISTRICTS CRICKET CLUB

A cricket club was formed at Glasshouse Mountains in 1927. At that time there were also clubs at Beerwah and Landsborough. In 1949 Southern Districts Cricket Club was formed combining all three areas and the home grounds were located at Landsborough. The club later relocated to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Ground. In 1997, the name was changed to Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club. There were a few reasons for this happening. Caboolture Cricket Club had entered the competition, and therefore, Southern Districts was not the most southern club in the competition. Also, some were unaware as to where Southern Districts was, and therefore, Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club seemed more appropriate for the area.

Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club Inc. is a non-profit organisation with a band of approximately 20 volunteers who undertake various positions, such as committee members, coaches, managers, scorers, grounds people and publicity officer. The club provides two turf wickets, one synthetic pitch and fully enclosed practice nets and sight screens for our No. 1 field as part of its facility which is located at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Ground.

Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club caters for juniors (both boys and girls) who range in age from 5 to 16 years. Once these players leave the junior ranks they move into our senior divisions. Last season, 2013/14, the club consisted of four Senior teams (Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4) and four Junior teams (U10, U14 and 2 x U16) and fifteen participants in the “Milo in2Cricket” (previously Milo Have-A-Go) programme for those under the age of 8 who haven’t played cricket before. We draw our players from the hinterland towns of Glasshouse Mountains, Beerwah, Peachester, Palmwoods, Elimbah, Beerburrum, Landsborough and Maleny and with some players also travelling from Burpengary, Caboolture, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Woodford, Bribie Island, Noosa and Brisbane.

The club brings the sport of cricket to our rural community with all participants benefiting both physically and socially. Our club strives to improve and maintain its facilities, which enables us to provide a safe and professional environment for our players and those members of the community who also use our facilities.
