Girringun Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) is a Traditional Owner owned, managed and governed not for profit community organisation representing the land and sea country interests of nine tribal groups including: Bandjin, Djiru, Girramay, Gugu Badhun, Gulnay, Jirrbal,
Nywaigi, Warrgamay and Warrungnu.

Broadly, the area of these tribes encompasses land around North Maria Creek, south-west to the Tully River, north to Ravenshoe and Herberton, south to include country east of Einsleigh, south west to Greenvale and Rollingstone to the south. The offshore islands
and waters surrounding Hinchinbrook, Goold, Brooke, Family and Dunk are also included in this area.

GAC was established by senior Elders in April 1996 to negotiate a name change for a National Park within the region. Since that time, GAC has grown and developed to be one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal Traditional Owner controlled, owned and operated land and sea management organisations in Australia.

Girringun prides itself on successfully initiating and pursuing precedent-setting outcomes for its member groups and the broader north Queensland community. Girringun Aboriginal Corporation is the major employer In the small seaside locality of Cardwell, situated some two hours north of Townsville and south of Cairns.

GAC’s programs include: Art Centre, Girringun Indigenous Rangers, Biodiversity and Nursery,
Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreement (TUMRA), and Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA).

GAC’s membership consists of over 750 adult
Traditional Owners from the nine tribal groups and the GAC Board is made up of nine members - one representative from each Traditional Owner group.

GAC is legally incorporated under The Corporations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2006 (CATSI Act).
