There has been quite a bit of press about the destruction of rainforests in South-east Asia, home to some of the most bio-diverse ecosystems in the world, with the threat of losing these forests and destroying the livelihood of native people, orang-utan, Sumatran tiger populations and other important wildlife. We do not stock any waxes that were involved in such destruction of the environment and we knew it would not be acceptable to you either, the company where I purchase my palm wax from have partnered with a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. This organization was founded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and heads of government and industry involved in palm cultivation. The RSPO was founded to develop and define best practices for sustainable palm cultivation, and protection of the environment.

Palm oil is primarily produced in Indonesia and Malaysia and has become so popular with food manufacturers around the world that it is putting an enormous strain on the environment. Not only does the candle industry not even use 1% of all palm oil produced, it never has used or sourced palm oil from these ecologically important areas. If you are concerned about palm oil rest assured the candle industry is not part of the problem. Forty per cent of all products found on our supermarket shelves contain palm oil, but there is no way of knowing which ones they are. Palm oil can be labelled as more than a dozen things, and is often included under the umbrella term, vegetable oil.
In food, it can be labelled as sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecyl sulphate, palmate, palm oil kernel and palmitate
