Earth Eggs

We, the Hood family, were traditional (until the chooks arrived) beef cattle farmers, at Keith, in the South East of South Australia. After travelling extensively last year we realised that the food on offer didn’t taste the same as ours grown at home!! We could see the benefit of adding Chookens to our enterprise mix for many different reasons but, we also needed to manage them in a fashion that their eggs were as tasty as our back yard chooken eggs.

To the best of my knowledge we are one of only two or three South Australian egg producers housing their chookens in “movable housing”. Our chookens are moved every day, they are not locked in and they have no fences, they are freer than free range, they choose ALL their activities in a day, including their diet!!

We can personally guarantee that our, “Earth Eggs”, have been laid by ‘cruising chookens’. They are constantly cruising, living in a mobile chooken caravan. They spend the evenings perching, guarded from foxes by dogs Sandy and Boothy.

At day break our chookens fly or stroll from the van and relish in the delight of fresh air and pasture plus a smorgasbord of nutrients stimulated by the cattle that they are following. Our chookens have a big job, they are here to regenerate our farm, chookens are great at digging, scratching, fertilising and sanitising our soils and pastures. At only 7 chookens per hectare gosh they have a big job!! Our chookens and cattle work together as a unit, in a rotational grazing system.

By working with each other they keep our pastures clean, fertilized and parasite free! This means no harmful chemicals are required making cleaner, greener and yummier produce for all.

Earth Eggs are different because, our chookens are free to be chookens, they are moved every day and we don’t have sales targets. We stock the appropriate number of chookens to heal and benefit our land. Our chookens are beyond free range. Our ‘Earth Eggs’ are a yummy by-product of a whole farm plan, in which, both chookens and cattle play a major role.

We believe “Earth Eggs” will be a valuable South Australian product supplying consumers with what they want, grass fed, paddock eggs!!
