In 2015, the UN’s Millennium Goals progress report indicates the issues of poverty and hunger continue to be prevalent in our contemporary world. For poor people living in developing nations, food insecurity and malnutrition remove opportunities that help to break the poverty cycle. Previous attempts by governments and international development agencies to address poverty and hunger through top-down policy driven approaches have overlooked community needs and indigenous perspectives. As a result, these initiatives have not produced the desired outcomes.

eShamba is a bottom-up social enterprise, to empower communities at the grassroots so that they can build resilience to the many causes of poverty and hunger. To achieve this vision, we are working towards creating a new labour model by coupling indigenous ecological knowledge with technology to help communities across the world cultivate food justice.
