Hand braided pieces for horse, rider and canine are original works of art. Braiding is a skill I learnt over twenty years ago when I was fortunate to spend time on the Dorrance ranch in California, USA. The horsemen and women I rode and roped with commonly used a mecate rein on their snaffle bit horses.
The mecate is generally longer than the Australian split rein and may be utilised as a lead. I personally use them on a regular basis because of their versatility. I initially made gear using rawhide and leather then the parachute cord. The natural feel and texture of this material resulted in an attractive hand braided product that would last for many years.
Since the late eighties American, Australian and European horsemen and women have utilised my hand crafted products for a wide range of applications and appreciate their quality and durability.
I would like to acknowledge Bill Dorrance for teaching me about rawhide braiding and roping along with his daughter in-law Leslie for sharing with me her skill for making reins and accessories.
