Our photos: that’s what most of us reply when asked what we would save first from a burning house. Why? Those images are irreplaceable fragments of our lives recorded at a particular moment. Together they form the centerpiece of our family’s collective memory.
I have a passion for photographing families and I record my own family’s exploits at home and on holiday. I love capturing those fleeting moments then looking back later to a time that has passed all too quickly.
Babies grow into children, children become teenagers, teens mature into adults – and this all happens in what seems like a blink of the eye.
I photographed my four-year-old daughter in my studio recently and it wasn’t until I looked at the image on my screen that I realised how much she had grown up. It was like looking at her for the first time. How could this be, I see her every day? But that’s the power of a photograph. It allows you to capture forever that look, that smile, that essence … that beauty.
Having three children I’m very comfortable around kids of all ages and can gain their trust during a shoot to capture their natural individuality.
It can be in the studio or at a location like your home or a favourite spot. My preference is for natural fun shots with as little intrusion from the camera as possible. After 14 years as a full-time family portrait photographer (and a photographer all my life, well, since I was eight), I have developed the skills to guide families into natural poses that yield pleasing compositions.
