More about Cycletrek Bike Shop & Mountain Bike Park

Cycletrek is a unique bike shop catering mainly for mountain bikes, located just 2 hours drive south of Perth. It is situated in a bush setting where customers can test ride a bike they are interested in purchasing, or their own bike after Barrie has repaired it, on the 8 plus kilometres of singletrack.

This track is highly regarded by the many Western Australian riders who have competed in the annual WA Mountain Bike Association state round held there for the last 4 years. It is a track built for mountain bikers by a mountain biker – Barrie (Baz) Thomas.

Baz has owned and operated Cycletrek since 1987 – however until October 2007, Cycletrek was located in Bunbury. Baz began mountain biking soon after he and his wife, Sherry, purchased the bike shop. He started off riding in the bush around Bunbury, but found the tracks too sandy and a bit boring. So he loaded his bike in the car and drove out to the forest around Wellington Dam in the Darling Ranges (now Wellington National Park) about 20km east of Bunbury – and so began his love affair with mountain biking.

The first mountain bike race in WA was held in Albany in 1988, and then a few months later, Baz and Sherry and some friends organised the second WA mountain bike race which was held at Mt Lennard in the Wellington National Park. This generated the interest for other local people to start mountain biking in the area.

Cycletrek is now located at Kambarang, a 100 acre bush property which Barrie and Sherry discovered in 1993, while on a full moon ride with a bunch of other crazy people. Kambarang is an aboriginal word from the local Nyoongar language, which is name of the ‘season’ of October – November. Nyoongar culture has a close association and deep respect for the land. They have 6 seasons, and when you live in the south west bush for a while, you see that 6 seasons are more appropriate here than the European four. October to November – Kambarang – is our peak wildflower time, including the unusual and delightful Butterfly orchid (Caladenia Lobata).

Kambarang is in Lowden overlooking the Preston Valley in the Shire of Donnybrook / Balingup, 50km from Bunbury, and is a pleasant 2½ hour drive from Perth. The nearest train station is Bunbury and there are buses from Perth or Bunbury to Donnybrook. It is 8 km from the precious Preston Virgin forest, located in the Preston National Park, which has the famous Bibulmun Track walking trail passing through it. The Munda Biddi mountain bike trail passes through Donnybrook (20km from Kambarang) and the Mt Lennard trails are about 24km away.

Cycletrek has full workshop facilities and Barrie can repair and service most types of bikes including front shocks and disc brakes as well as build wheels. Repair bikes can be picked up from Bunbury, Donnybrook, Dardanup or Boyanup on a Mondays or Thursdays. Emergency repairs can be done ‘trailside’ if accessible.

Visitors are welcome to ride the trails at Kambarang by prior arrangement and may camp overnight, however currently there are no facilities available. In time a full camping ground will be built.
