More about Core Condition Pilates & Massage Studio Mildura

My journey into Pilates began as quite an unwilling one and I guess one out of desperation.
I'm not from the typical classical ballet background, which quite a few instructors are. I was always fit and strong, especially for a girl. I had trained as a Secondary PE teacher, Aerobics and Gym Instructor, but I was never (ever!) flexible or gracious in movement.
I come from a water skiing background. I was skiing at the age of 3 and by 16 represented Australia in Speed & Endurance based skiing. Although I was only young, the years of training technically incorrect as well as competing paid its toll on my back. I was regularly seeking therapeutic ways of relieving my pain for the next 10 or so years.
My mum initiated me to Pilates. She took me to a local lady who was, at the time running classes in her lounge room. I had absolutely no idea what Pilates was, so I made my own assumptions. There was no initial consultation or history check. I was told that I was young and fit and because I was trained as a secondary Physical Education teacher that I should be "OK"!! I began the session unable to reach my knees (pretty terrible for a 27 year old) but finished with fingertips touching the ground. Needless to say I was impressed & returned the next week with a bit more of a positive attitude, a willingness to be a little more open minded as well as a desire to touch the ground again!!
It was the progress with which I made which made me look into educating myself a little more. I figured if I felt so good after one session a week, imagine how unreal I could be if I could do this on a daily basis!!
Needless to say that was some 8 or so years ago now and I'm still loving what Pilates can do, not only for me but my clients also. It didn't take me long to move forward from teaching mat /floor classes to purchasing Reformer beds and training in other apparatuses. I continue to educate myself and ensure that I regularly participate in training courses. We all learn from our own experiences, so ensure that I consult with every new client before heading into a session, whether it be a mat or studio session. I'm quite proud of the studio and the environment I've created. I really believe knowledge is power and so I'm continually aiming to educate clients and give them ideas for things that they can implement into their daily activities .
I have recently completed my massage certificate and have found that this combined with the Pilates has broadened my knowledge even further. The two modalities combined have great results for people. In my progression of knowledge I find that I can now help to treat a client and then follow through with prescribing appropriate stretches or exercises which people are able to incorporate into their daily activities.
Life's journey's are always interesting. I guess that fifteen years ago I'd never even heard of Pilates, let-alone think that I'd be running my own studio. However I love the fact that I've taken this path. It gives me great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, as well as pride in knowing that I've been able to motivate as well as educate people in helping them to help themselves.

STUDIO HOURS:
Clients pre-book sessions based on the type of Pilates session that they'd like to do. I encourage private consultations before heading into any class. During these sessions it gives me an opportunity to get a client history, assess their posture, find out their goals as well as teach some basic fundamentals. I generally won't put a time-frame on how many private consultations are needed, as everyone learns differently and at a different rate. I will always send people home with homework, little things that they can begin to incorporate into their daily lives. Sometimes it's as simple as rolling a golf ball under their arches, engaging pelvic floors correctly or finding a wall to stretch against. I believe it is unsafe for someone to go straight into a session with no prior consultation. Pilates is a fabulous form of exercise, but if done incorrectly has the potential to injure. Whilst at times I may need to demonstrate a stretch or exercise, at no time do I 'podium' teach. If I'm focusing on my own workout, how can I ensure my clients safety and ability to work hard??!! I am always moving around the studio keeping a constant eye on ensuring clients are 'technically' correct, not only working hard, but smart and safe.
Mat or floor is based on pre-designed stretches & exercises, which everyone follows, with modifications made for individuals as needed. It is more whole group based. Classes can be up to 10 participants.
Studio sessions; semi-private session. Uses a variety of equipment, including Reformer beds, as well as other apparatus. Classes are designed around individual needs. Everyone has their own tailor made program, which is based around stretching the tighter structures and strengthening the weaker ones. Programs generally change approximately every 5 weeks, pending on individuals and their progress. Maximum of 5 clients per class
Private sessions: some people choose 1:1 session based on a variety of individual factors. Some have busy work commitments which means that they can't make it at the same time every week. Others just prefer the 1:1 ratio. Programs are again designed around the individual and their needs.

Pilates classes are held 6 days a week including early morning, to daytime, evening as well as Saturday mornings. The timetable is set at the beginning of every new term, rarely are changes made from one term to the next, generally more classes are added on.
