The beginning of rowing in the east dates back to around the middle of the last century. Rowing originated in the 1860 and the club was founded in 1864 and the first President was Sir Edward Creasy. In 1882 the club received more publicity with the appointment of the the Governor Sir James Longden and this was the time a crew was first sent to take part in an inter-club regatta in Calcutta for the Hooghly cup. In 1895 at a committee meeting it was decided that the club colors should be dark blue and white. In 1898 the first foreign club (Madras) visited. The visit gave rise to a long series of races between the two clubs.
Also the Colombo Rowing Club is a private and exclusive club which has a member base of 500 members and takes members in by way of interview by the club committee. It is one of the hardest clubs to gain entry in way of membership.....
