This is an encaustic painting and mixed media workshop which will give you a thorough introduction to the encaustic medium processes. Encaustic is a rich organic medium with endless possibilities. Artists with backgrounds in almost any medium will find this workshop an exciting opportunity to expand their visual vocabulary with wax.

Once you learn the basics, encaustics will surprise and entice you to use many skills from other mediums, allowing you to build on your own mediums, skills and more, with endless diversity and amazing outcomes in the medium. I have never found another medium that can include so many crossovers of techniques and skills. Participants will be encouraged to experiment and to create works of a non-objective nature.

Encaustic is perhaps the most sensual of all artists’ paints, and it is as versatile as any 21st century medium. It can be polished to a high gloss, carved, scraped, layered, collaged, dipped, cast, modelled, sculpted, textured, and combined with oil. It cools immediately, so that there is no drying time, yet it can always be reworked

We will cover:
OH&S – creating – safe and functional studio space; choosing/using encaustic equipment; learn the components of encaustic medium/encaustic paints; variety of supports; how to get a perfect encaustic base; brush types/techniques; collage/embedding/transfer/ techniques; incising/stamping/back filling; creating a wide range of textural surfaces; transfer images and much more.

This workshop can be a one or two day intensive program – depending on how much time you can spare. After day one you will have learnt the basics, after day two you will have put into practice what you have learnt and you will be introduced to more advanced techniques. All participants should complete at least two art works each day. Please let me know if you require me to order more than two substrates prior to the workshop.
