Calvary Health Care Kogarah

Calvary Health Care Kogarah public hospital in Sydney provides Specialist Palliative Care Services and Rehabilitation Services to the local St George and Sutherland Shire regions and extensive Community Health Services to the St George region. We sit within the Local Health District as an affiliated organisation.

We are one of the largest sub-acute hospitals in NSW serving approximately 12,500 patients per year.

The hospital is set within lush and private garden settings to enhance the wellbeing of our patients and their families.

Calvary Health Care Kogarah is considered a leader in Palliative Care and End-of-Life Care within NSW. We deliver a range of Palliative Care services in both community (as an outpatient at home or visiting the hospital) and inpatient settings.

Our Rehabilitation Service provides comprehensive assessment and interventions with a focus on Aged Care, Orthopaedic and Reconditioning after a long illness, supported by specialist services including a Hydrotherapy pool, Bereavement Service and respite support for carers of people with Dementia.

Calvary Health Care Kogarah is a teaching hospital with a strong and active commitment to research. We are affiliated with the University of NSW and Notre Dame University and provide clinical placements in under-graduate and post-graduate programs.

Established in 1966 by our founders, the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Calvary Health Care Kogarah provides public hospital services under a Service Level Agreement with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District and is an Australian Council of Healthcare Standards accredited hospital.

Calvary Health Care Kogarah is built on a former orchard site, on land owned by the Fitzgerald Family. The land was bequeathed by the Fitzgerald Family to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney to establish a hospital catering to people of all faiths. Calvary Health Care Kogarah began its work in 1966 as a Hospice for the terminally ill under the care of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary. Calvary Health Care Kogarah is a third schedule public hospital and sits within the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD).

In 1981 a day hospital and a Bereavement Service were opened. In 1984 an administration wing was built, with further extensions opened in 1991 to provide accommodation for the Calvary Community Palliative Care Team and a Pain Clinic for outpatients. In 1991 the Hospital became an associated teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales.

In 1994, Calvary Health Care Kogarah embraced a new focus of care. In addition to continuing to provide its excellent Palliative Care Service, a 16 bed Rehabilitation inpatient unit was commenced, in consultation with the Local Area Health Service, in order to meet the needs of the growing number of patients requiring rehabilitation.

In 1995 the Community Rehabilitation Aged Care Service was moved to the Calvary Health Care Kogarah site. Since that time the Rehabilitation and Aged Care Service has expanded to include the Transitional Aged Care Service; Continence Advisory Service; Dementia Day Care, which includes some overnight respite care for Dementia clients; Driver Assessment Rehabilitation Service; Diversity Health Service; Podiatry; and Community Aged Care Rehabilitation.

In 1999 the Calvary Holistic Healing Centre was opened, and offered access to natural therapies including massage and aromatherapy.

In 2001 further renovations increased accommodation to provide 43 Palliative Care and 32 Rehabilitation inpatient beds and accommodation for hospital administration and multidisciplinary services.

The Day Rehabilitation Gymnasium and Hydrotherapy Pool were opened in 2009 and internal renovations to the Chapel of the Resurrection were completed.

Mary Potter House Dementia Day Care Centre and Calvary Community Health buildings were opened in 2012.
In 2016 Calvary Health Care Kogarah, now part of the Little Company of Mary Health Care Group, celebrates 50 years since its foundation.
